Motorguide BASS Electric Convention Results & Story

Bassers,

Here’s the results from the just finished BASS Electric Convention.

Story and pics to follow soon.

75 anglers descended upon the fish rich and much revered waters of Lake Wivenhoe for the climactic event of the 2005 BASS Electric Series the MotorGuide BASS Electric Convention.

Delivered from 23 qualifying events from throughout Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, the event presented competitors with two fishing session, three days of fun and four events in which to prove their angling skills.

Day one of fishing in the mid week tournament presented anglers with the opportunity of compiling their two largest fish to be presented at the scales. Showing his long respected knowledge and history on the dam was session one winner Gary Fitzgerald of Albany Creek.

Compiling a 2/2, 5.09kg limit, Fitzgerald let everyone know that he was the one to chase when it came to catch the big bass Wivenhoe is so famous for. Fishing the middle reaches of the dam out from Billy’s Bay, and travelling up to an hour and a half each way to reach his fish, Fitzgerald or “Fitzy” as he is readily know as, targeted bass holding in depth, ranging from 32-40 feet.

Once located with his side imaging, 987 Humminbird sounder, Fitzy opted for an, ‘old-school’ bass lure, a 40 gram Raider slug to tempt his fish.
“The secret was to work the lure fast”, Fitzy explained.
“You wanted to keep it moving quick, other wise the catfish would get it”, he added.
For this, Fitzgerald would cast his lure away from the boat, allowing it to sink to the bottom.
“I’d then give it six or seven quick burns of the reel, then let it to sink back to the bottom. If I got a touch I’d just feed it back to the fish, and hopefully induce it to take the lure”, Fitzgerald concluded.

The tackle used by Fitzgerald to bag his bass by his own omission was straight out of his barra fishing tackle bag, and included a E Grell B4, 6’6”, rod matched to a Daiwa Fuego reel, spooled with 30lb Bionic Braid, and finished off with a Rod Harrison Knotted Dog leader.

Raining on Fitzgerald’s parade of winning both fishing sessions was second session winner David Hislop of Morayfield.

Delivering a single, 2.79kg fish to the scales on the second “one fish limit”day of the tournament, Hislop claimed the second of the two MotorGuide electric motors on offer for the event.

Hislop, like many anglers on the second day chose to travel a considerable distance to find his bass, running as far as the main basin in the lower reaches of the waterway to catch his fish.

Once there Hislop targeted scattered fish, hugging the bottom in 30-45 feet of water. Here he presented a standard for many bass anglers, a Jackall 70 Mask Vib, in Ayu colour. Free falling it to the bottom before retrieving it back through the sounded fish with a lift and drop retrieve.

The outcome for Hislop was three land bass, and a two fish bag that would have worried the leaders the previous day when competitors weighed in a two fish bag rather than the second day, single fish limit.

The gear used by Hislop to muscle his second day winning limit was comprised of a, 6’6”, custom made Gary Howard, GLX G.Loomis spin rod, matched to a Daiwa 2000 TDA spin reel, and spooled with 10lb Platypus Superbraid, and finished off with 10lb Berkley Vanish as leader.

Adding to the competitors list of competitive tasks was a trivia quiz on the Monday night briefing, and a casting competition following the Tuesday fishing session.

BASS Electric regular Roy Souter showed his prowess with his level of ABT and BASS fishing knowledge, picking up the winners prize for the trivia quiz, while recently crowned BASS Megabucks champion Trevor Stead claiming the mantle of number one caster, with his victory in the Tuesday afternoon cast-off.

Gary Fitzgerald once again showed he was the one to catch adding the title of BASS Electric Convention Overall Champion to list of achievements for the tournament. Winning an onboard Guest charger to add to his MotorGuide electric motor, Fitzgerald walked away with a bounty of prizes and due reward for the hard work he’s put into the dam over the years.

2006 will once again see the BASS Electric Series return, with the same number of events schedule to take place in three states. For more information on the coming season keep an eye out for the 2006 ABT Tournament Angler Guide, due out in the January 2006, or visit, www.australianbass.com.au.
