80 anglers in 47 boats attended Sunday’s Electric Qualifying Event to see Gavin Dunne weigh in a record 5.2kg bag. Both he and Scott Evans shared the Big Bass prize with two fat 2.75kg bass.
In what was considered a quiet day for most anglers, it seemed a game plan to travel the 7km, 1.5 hour trip towards the dam wall paid off for Gav. Using the same Mask Vibe 60 in Pearl Ayu all day Gav managed to catch about 10 fish towards his final monster bag. Using an EGrell Team Xstream B47 rod, Yamatoyo 20pd mainline and Yamatoyo Harris 20pd fluoro leader. Gavin explained that “the trick was not to let it hit the bottom and to use short, sharp rips of the rod tip”.
Fishing nearby, Scott Evans caught only one fish for the day, but it was an excellent 2.75kg bass. Using a large white Squidgy fish slowly rolled, Scott remarked that the fish were “very aggressive early”.
Elliot Fooks managed 2 good fish to take second place. Being encouraged all day by his father Gary, he caught his fish on 3″ Gulp Night Crawlers in the June Bug colour. Using a Berkley Dropshot rod, Stradic 2500 reel and fishing light with 6pd Fireline and 10pd Yamatoyo leader, he found by jigging from the bottom most of his bites were mid water. He noticed these fish on the sounder as single large arches rather than schooled fish towards the entrance to Logans Inlet.
With the Electric Convention to be held at Wivenhoe late September, this now seems the score to beat in terms of big bags.
