Weger Wins Hinze – 17 April BASS Electric Results

by Graeme Bolton

Sunday the 17th of April saw Round 11 of the BASS Electric take place on Hinze Dam. A field of 45 competitors took to the water at 7.00am in what promised to be a glorious day. Unfortunately promises are often broken, as was the case when the wind freshened up to a gusty 10-12kts. Hinze Dam is traditionally renowned for good bank bites and hot surface action. However, with a steadily falling water level and poor water clarity from the recent strong winds, this was not to be.

Having said this, event winner Mike Weger seemed to have cracked the code. Mike recorded a total of 13 Bass ranging in overall length from 330mm to 410mm. Weighing in a full bag of two fish, Mike not only took out first place with a total weight of 2.15kg, but he also shared the prize for the biggest bass (1.3kg) with Dave Carey. Mike also shared his secret of success with those at the presentation. All but 2 of Mike’s fish were taken on Atomic Fat Grubs, fished on 3/8th jig heads in about 26 feet of water. Mike indicated that whilst pre-fishing he had discovered that if fished too fast, he wasn’t producing the same results. Thus on the day, Mike made a conscious effort of slowing his retrieve rate right down and was handsomely rewarded.

Second place was filled by Ian Galloway with a respectful, full bag, of 1.9kg. Ricky Simmons nudged Chris Eldred (both with a full bag at 1.85kg) out of third place and into fourth on a count back of the biggest Bass. Fifth place was shared between Dan Mallory and Tony Payne with identical full bags at 1.75kg.

Whilst more than half of the field registered a fish, those that did not can still feel proud. The conditions on the day were not the best and from the majority of accounts, even the locals had to fish hard to produce the goods. The Australian Bass Association would like to thank Steve Morgan and the ABT for the donation of 25% of the entry fees taken on the day. 100% of the ABA’s money goes directly back into fish stocking programs in various parts of Southeast Queensland and Northern New South Wales.
