Cullen Creels on Rising Maroon – Bass Electric

Twenty-one year old sawmill worker, Drew Cullen, easily topped a crowded leader-board to take out the fourth BASS Electric event for the season at Maroon Dam. Following significant late-week rains, anglers met a Maroon on the rise and mostly targeted bass flocking to the flooded shallows to feast. But, amongst 42 anglers weighing limits, Cullen’s bass were significantly larger, for which he was rewarded with his first BASS Electric win in his third event.

“It felt like my heart nearly stopped when I found out that I’d won,” Cullen said, “and getting straight into BASS Electric Convention is a real bonus. I’ll be fishing more rounds this year, but I’ll be relaxed while doing so.”

Sharing places in Convention with Cullen is Kev Moore (2/2, 1.33kg), Dale Sinclair (2/2, 1.30kg), Les Smith (2/2, 1.30kg), Jason Jovanovic (2/2, 1.27) and Harry Watson (2/2, 1.227kg).

Drew’s winning technique involved fishing very shallow sunken flats near the top of the dam. After landing a series of small fish in the bays adjoining Pointro, he upgraded to his winning limit on the flats just to the south of the timber in the late morning.

“We were only fishing water around a metre deep and you could see the tops of the [terrestrial] weeds sticking out all over the place,” Cullen reported.

Casting a Fire Tiger 4gram Squidgy Spinnerbait across the flooded flats, Cullen held the rod tip high and slow rolled the lure across the sunken weed tops, flicking it up and off them if the speed was too slow. The bigger bass bashed the bait at any time during the retrieve.

Drew’s bassin’ tackle consisted of a Jaxe custom 6’ spin rod, Daiwa Caprice 2500 reel, 6lb Berkley Fireline and some 10lb Vanish leader.

Fishing in the back of his mate, Corey Head’s boar, Cullen finished by thanking Corey for leaving enough bass behind for him to clean up the scraps.

At the top of the tight bunch of anglers next down the scoreboard (where 100 grams meant ten places), 42 year old coal tester, Kev Moore, made his BASS electric debut. The best of his nine keepers for the day bit early in the morning and both Kev and his partner had their limits in the well by 9am.

Kev cast a 5cm Rapala Rattlin-Rap in Silver Shad colour into similarly sunken and weedy bays and backwaters on the northern fringe of the dam.

“I just held the rod pretty high and retrieved the lure at a constant, medium speed,” Moore explained, and the bass just kept on eating it.

Such is the fun of reaction-fishing newly-covered ground.

Moore’s tackle consisted of a 6’6” Ugly Stik baitcast rod coupled with a Shimano Calcutta 200 reel, 10lb Fireline and a 14lb Vanish leader.

“It won’t be my last BASS Electric event, that’s for sure,” Moore smiled and he toted his prize pack to the car.

Overall, 64 anglers fished for the ten prize packs and Convention invitations and $320 was raised for fish stocking. The next BASS Electric event will be held on 4th April in NSW (Danjeera Dam) and 16th May in Queensland (Lake Lenthall). For more information, call Simon Goldsmith on (07) 3268 3992 b/h. – ABT.
