Two mates from Mendooran, NSW, travelled a long way to outclass the
19-strong angler field at the Clarrie Hall BASS Kayak round, sponsored
by Hobie Kayaks. Dean Boyce (1st) and Bernard Austin (2nd) travelled to
the stretch of lake near the dam wall to secure multiple bass and
ultimately the victory in an event with a scoreboard as close as can be.
With only 5cm of fish separating 1st from 6th place, the Mendooran men established a solid game plan the day before the event and executed it perfectly.
Dean fished an 1/8 oz AusSpin Rev Head loaded with a 3” Berkley Gulp! Jigging Grub in Banana Prawn colour to the edges in areas with relatively bare banks.
“In the morning, we’d cast right in close and get the bites close to the bank, but as the day wore on, the fish slid deeper and we were getting bit in around 5 metres of water,” Bernard said.
Dean explained that they’d throw the baits into gaps in the weed and slow roll the lures back to the boat.
Dean used a Native Ultimate 12 Propel kayak, while Bernard angled from a Hobie Outback.
