Father and Son Jigs a Win.
Last weekend 57 teams competed in Bassin’s R4 event at Lake Glenbawn on what could be said one of the best weekend’s weather wise but probably one of the hardest Bass wise. With only 109 Bass brought back to the weigh station with an average weight of 798grams.
Optional Extra’s father and son team of Ron & Jack Jones took out their first win of the Bassin series. The boys have competed since the start of the competition back in 2007 and finally cracked it for a win. In another tough bite Ron & Jack started session 3 with a 2kg lead on the rest of the field and did it pretty easy getting their limit of 4 Bass within the first ½ an hour of each session to secure a full limit of 12 fish for 9.88kg and the only team to do so. Jack said the lure of choice was a Jackal ice jig in red and black. They targeted suspended fish in the 10 – 15’ mark watching the sounder carefully, holding the ice jig in front of their faces and using short sharp twitches. The boys fished right up the back around the 8 knot zone during the competition and twice Jack had to be brought back to the weigh station with his teams fish and the key tag due to the fact that Dad hadn’t got the Yamaha serviced properly before the comp and was having some electrical issues.
Second place went to the ever consistent Team Mako’s Greg Parkes and Steve Almond who vertically fished Berkley Gulps also on suspended fish around the 15’ mark. There second placing has enforced their current first place standing in the team of the year points score with a 10 fish limit for 7.79kg.
Third placed team of Gregg Flett and Toby Wilson (Team Damiki / Barz Optics) also fished towards the top end of the dam fishing around trees and suspended Bass with plastics, Damiki blades and ice jigs to secure their 7 fish bag of 7.380kg
The EvaKool Big Bass went to Bassfury’s Pro angler Steve Richards with a tiny 1.41kg specimen, but hey it was the biggest for the weekend. Steve also caught his fish on a Jackal ice jig. Well done Steve.
Ist placed Junior Angler also went to Jack Jones with 3 Bass for 2.63kg and took home a Lamiglas Competitor Spin rod and a prize pack for his troubles. 2nd place was James Fairburn with 2 Bass for 1.7kg and 3rd was Ryan Jones with 2 Bass for 1.49kg.
Everyone seemed to have a good time even though for some the fishing was tough. Hope to see you all in a couple of months for R5 at St Clair on the 7th August.
