A cool and foggy morning on Lake Wivenhoe saw 53 anglers head off to battle with the legendary big bass of the Brisbane Valley. Some made the long haul from Logans Inlet to the flats near Platypus Cliffs, and the gamble paid off for winner Mike Weger and his partner Adrian Wilson. Their bags of 3.42kg and 3.32kg were enough to relegate Jesper Noiesen to third place. The big trip didn’t pay off for one trio of anglers who paid the penalty of not having enough battery power. A spirited sprint around the shore line by Simon Barkhuizen to get the key tag back wasn’t quite fast enough. The late penalty saw the biggest bass for the event, a healthy 2.575 fish caught by Mike Connelly, dropped by 650gm to 1.925kg. A total of 16 fish were weighed in, although the top place getters landed a total of 8 fish between them, upgrading several times.
First place winner, Mike Weger used a Team Daiwa Fuego reel on a Wilson ATC 6’9” Baitcaster to present a 3/8oz Black and Gold Evergreen Blade to the fish which were suspending in 10 metres of water. Close behind in second place, Adrian Wilson used a Team Daiwa SOL on a Team Daiwa Battler rod to present the same lure as his partner.
