Lake Lenthalls Electric Results Jun 7

Twenty three anglers from as far south as the Gold Coast and north to Gin Gin attended the ABT Bass Electric competition held at Lake Lenthall near Maryborough on the 6th June 2009.

The one metre extension to the wall a couple of years ago and the amount of bass that travelled over the dam wall because of the heavy rains over the past twelve months certainly contributed to the lack of fish that were weighted in at the end of the competition.

There were encouraging signs though, with numerous anglers boating under-sized fish, and the dam structure rapidly changing with lily pads and weed beds returning the dam to its original glory. In the future, there is no doubt that with constant stocking, Lake Lenthalls will live up to its reputation of being once again, one of Queensland’s best bass fisheries.

There were only two legal bass submitted to the weigh-in station at the completion of the competition. Regular ABT Bass Electric competitor, Jonathan Ward of Burpengary, topped the leader board with one healthy fish for a total weight of 1.250kg. Jonathan also claimed the big bass title as well. He traveled up the left arm targeting lily pads and weed beds. He captured his nice bass on a TN60 Jackall in the brown dog colour. By casting on top of the weed bed with a quick burn to the weed face, then letting it fall to the bottom and slow-rolling it back to the boat. Jonathan positioned himself in about fifteen feet of water.

His tackle of choice was a G Loomis MBR782 rod matched to a Daiwa Steez reel spooled with 17lb braid using 16lb Nitlon as leader.

Runner-up in the competition was Gympie’s own Robert Ottesen. Robert didn’t travel very far, as he captured his fish on a weed bed opposite the boat ramp late in the session. His .807kg bass engulfed a Little Max Blade in the gold colour. Robert worked his lure along the weed edge and let it flutter down the face before slow-rolling it back to the boat in about twelve feet of water.

His tackle of choice was a Shimano Baitcaster rod matched to a Shimano Calisto reel spooled with 20lb mono line straight through.

As there were no third, fourth or fifth positions won, the prizes went into a lucky draw where Rob Hinton, Jeff Dickson and Dean Wilson were the happy recipients.

I would like to welcome new member, Alastair Casey to the ABT ranks. Keep an eye out for this young guy in future results.

Congratulations to Jonathan and Robert as well as all competitors for a very enjoyable day. Special thanks must be given to the rangers of Lake Lenthall for their help on the day and to Dave Bullard for returning the competition the gear to Brisbane for the next round.

The next Electric Series held at Lake Lenthall will be on the 12th of July 2009.

Until next time,

Gary Leather
