With the 15 knot winds and the water temperature not registering above 15 degrees, it certainly wasn’t the perfect day for the ABT Bass Electric round held at Lake Gregory on Sunday, 17th August 2008.
Fifteen anglers braved the conditions, with eight fish being presented to the weigh-in scales. The competition started an hour earlier than normal to let the anglers take advantage of the early morning surface bite.
Rob Hinton took full advantage of the 6.00am start and boated the 1.82kg big bass for the competition on his first cast of the day. Rob won the competition with two bass for a total weight of 2.645kg. Rob’s first fish was caught on a gold Zipping Ziggy surface lure targeting one foot of water on top of the weed beds. Within 10 minutes of the competition starting, he had three surface strikes but only managed to land one fish. Later on in the morning he traveled into deeper water and targeted the weed edge in about 12 feet of water and landed his second fish on a Bassman Spinnerbait Avocado in 3/8oz.
Rob landed a total of four fish for the competition and was using his Berkley Dropshot rod matched to a Shimano Sienna 2500 spinning reel spooled with 10lb Suffix Performance braid and 12lb Nitlon leader.
Darren Harris came in second place with two fish for a total weight of 1.437kg. Darren’s first fish was boated at 7.30am using a Bassman Spinnerbait 1/4oz with the Carl skirt colour. Darren was fishing in five feet of water above the weed beds using a rapid retrieve back to the boat. His second fish was caught on a 3″ Powerbait in pearl olive colour with a 1/8TT jig head, slow rolling the line along the weed edge in about 12 feet of water.
Darrens’ tackle of choice was a Shimano Raider rod matched to a Daiwa Sol 2000 reel, spooled with 4lb Daiwa braid with 10lb Vanish leader.
Third place went to Tim Steenhuis with one fish for 1.353kg.
Fourth was well known bream angler Chris Horne with one fish at 1.23kg.
Final placegetter was new-comer to the Bass Electric series, John Dell with one fish for .722kg.
Fifteen anglers entered the competition, eight fish were weighed in for a total weight of 8.709kg with the average weight being 1.080kg.
Congratulations to all competitors and special thanks to the Bundaberg Sportfishing Club for their assistance at the weigh-in. All bass were tagged and released.
Until next time,
