A cool morning greeted 35 anglers to the ABT 2008 Bass Electric Series
held at Lake Gregory on Sunday 4th May. This was the second event in
the series held in our area over the past three weeks.
The weather was perfect with light winds and clear skies, but
unfortunately the bass weren’t that cooperative. Only eighteen anglers
presented bass to the weigh-in station and only four out of the 35
competitors weighed in their maximum bag limit of two fish.
Bundaberg had a strong representation with fourteen anglers competing. Unfortunately, it was not a local who took out top honours. Will Schloss, a young angler from Dalby took out the event with two fish, for a total weight of 2.2kgs. Will won comprehensively by submitting a bag almost one kilo heavier than second place getter, Dave Bullyard. Coming in third place was Paul Cooper.
Bundy’s best were seasoned campaigner Les Barber and relative new-comer Rob Hinton, who finished fourth and fifth respectively. Les presented one fish for a total weight of 1.22kgs, just 10 grams heavier then Rob’s fish. Both these anglers now automatically qualify for the Bass Electric Convention to be held in New South Wales at the end of the year. This will be Les’s third year and Rob’s second year running to qualify for that event.
The tactic used by both Les and Rob was to cast spinnerbaits along the weed edges and slowly retrieve the lure back to the boat. Both anglers had landed both their fish within one hour of the start of the competition.
Congratulations to both these local anglers for managing to qualify for the grand final. The next round of the ABT Bass Electric Series to be held locally will be on 22nd June at Lake Lenthalls. Until next time,
