A beautiful, calm morning greeted the anglers that turned out to take part in this first Lake Macdonald electric event for the year.
Competitor numbers were down on previous years due difficult fishing on the lake after thousands of fish going ‘over the wall’ during flood rains late last year. But the optimistic anglers duly made a game of it.
Sixteen legal fish were weighed in and most anglers reported catches of many undersized bass. Six anglers caught their bag limit of two bass while four anglers managed just one. Many different lures and techniques were used throughout the day.
First place was taken by 24 year old Brisbane lad, Andrew Baunach, catching a total of eight fish for the session. Andrew’s two biggest fish tipped the scales at a healthy 1.955kg. Andrew and his mate Stuart France fished close to the weed edges in various spots. Andrews rig consisted of a 3-5kg ATC hardstick rod, a Shimano Chronarch 50MG reel spooled with 10lb Nitlon braid and 10lb Nitlon leader. His lure of choice was a Jackall TN60.
Second placed Dale Ianna, a 23 year old boat builder from Burpengary, chose a Strudwick TPS spin rod, a Shimano Stradic 1000 reel with 4ib Fireline and 10lb leader, to cast a River to Sea, ‘Baby Crankbait’ (40mm in purple), close to the bank in the 3 ways and spillway areas. A slow even retrieve accounted for both of Dale’s fish. The Big Bass prize also went to Dale with a fish of 1.040kg.
Claiming third place was Bundaberg’s Les Barber with a 1.535kg bag. Les used his trusty Shimano River Raider rod and Calcutta 50B reel spooled with 10kg Platypus braid and Nitlon leader, to present a Brown Dog Jackall to the weed edges at the ‘3 ways’ area. A slow roll retrieve scored his fish.
A big thank you to the guys for competing and a special thanks again goes to stocking group president Jim Park for cooking up a much appreciated sausage sizzle for the hungry anglers.
