spring day greeted 22 anglers to the ABT Motorguide 2007 Bass Electric Series
held at the Isis Balancing Impoundment (Lake Gregory)
near Bundaberg. With little wind and
pristine water everybody was expecting large bags of fish to be weighed in, but
the bass weren’t that cooperative with only 27 fish being registered on the
large field of Bundaberg locals nominating for the event, they were hoping for
a clean sweep in the top five positions, but Toowoomba angler Trevor Stead
spoilt their glory by taking out the event.
The remaining positions were filled by Bundaberg’s best. Trevor, a first-timer to the Impoundment
certainly worked thing out quickly to bag a two fish limit of 2.427kgs and also
collecting the big bass prize at 1.417kgs.
Trevor’s tackle of choice was a TeamDaiwa Tierra spinning rod matched to
a Daiwa Tierra 2000 reel. Trevor had his
reel spooled with 4lb Fins braid while using 12lb bass Seil leader.
The lure that rewarded him with the event was
a TN60 Jackall lipless crankbait in the Ayu colour. Trevor’s technique for success was to
position his boat in about 14 feet of water and cast to a depth of around five
to six feet. With a slow rolling action
he managed to keep the lure just above the weed bed.
Trevor targeted a 500 metre stretch of weed
near the middle of the impoundment which bagged him seven fish for the session.
Bundaberg local Gary Leather managed to compile a bag limit of two fish for a
total weight of 2.210 kgs. Unlike
Trevor, he used two combinations to bag his limit. The first being a Rovex Karbonite baitcasting
rod, matched to a Rovex XCT-500 low profile baitcasting reel, spooled with 10lg
Suffix performance braid and 14lg Nitlon leader. His lure of choice for this combination was a
Jackall TN60 lipless crankbait in the Pearl Ayu colour.
This combination bagged him four out of his
six fish for the session. Gary’s second combination
was a Rovex Karbonite spinning rod match to a Penn Accord 1000 reel spooled
with 8lb Suffix performance braid while using 10lb Nitlon leader. The lure he selected was a Jackall Squirrel
67 in the Ayu colour. This combination
bagged two fish for the session.
Gary’s technique was
exactly the same as Trevors, as both of them worked the same stretch of weed
thanks must be given to the Bundaberg Sportfishing Association for their
assistance given with the weigh-in. All
bass were tagged and released successfully.
forward to seeing everyone at the next round of the ABT Bass Electric
