Gavin and partner Col Singleton, caught a total of 13 fish in the area around the Botanical Gardens. The boys caught fish early in the shallow water above the weeds, then moved to the deeper water as the morning wore on.
Using a 10 -14 lb Nories baitcaster rod with a Daiwa Alphas ITO B/C reel spooled with 10 lb. Yamatoyo S/W P.E. braid and 14 lb. Harris Flourocarbon leader, he presented an Ecogear CK40 F07, colour 331, shallow crankbait and VT 55 and VT 65 vibration lures.
Second placed Steve Otto from Diddillibah fished the western arm near the ‘Three Ways’ after successfully prefishing the area previously. Steve used a Shimano Stradic spin outfit with 14 lb Fireline and 20 lb Vanish leader to present a TN60 Gold Jackall to catch his bag.
In 3rd place was Yandina’s Scott (Bazza) McKenzie, who used a Daiwa Procaster Z spin rod and a Daiwa TDA 2000 reel spooled with 6 lb. Fireline and 12 lb. Nitlon leader with a brown aurora, Lucky Craft LV MAX 500 to catch his 2.8 kg bag in 20 feet of water in front of the Gerry Cook Hatchery in the main basin.
4th place went to Nerangba’s Johnathon Ward, who fished the ‘Three Ways’ near Steve Otto to compile his 2.34 kg tournament bag. Caught on a 1/2 oz ayu Smak Spinnerbait, slow rolled through the weeds, the offering was presented with a G. Loomis IMX CR752 B/C and Daiwa Alphas reel, spoled with 10 lb Bass Hard braid and flourocarbon leader.
The top five and BASS Electric Convention qualifiers were completed by Burpengary’s Dale Ianna who also fished the ‘Three Ways’ to catch his 2.14 kg bag.
Gavin said he was delighted with his win on his first trip to Macdonald, and is greatly indebted to local legend Mal Favager for revealing a top fishing spot.
“I would like to thank Mal for his help and most of all, the 37 anglers for taking part”, Dunne explained.
A total of $180 and money from the BBQ was donated to the local stocking group.
The next ‘ Maccas’ comp is on 30th July. See you there.
